3 Spring Cleaning Tips to Keep Your Teeth Shining Bright and Your Gums Healthy

1. Combine timing with technique to stay squeaky clean. A regular regimen of brushing and flossing is necessary to maintain a healthy mouth. We recommend brushing at least twice each day for two minutes each time, ideally just after you wake up and before you go to bed. The ideal time to floss is at night, but flossing at any point during the day at least once is still beneficial.

As important as maintaining this regular timing is for your oral health, technique also plays a role in how well you keep everything clean. Be sure to tilt your brush at a 45-degree angle along your gums and to brush in small circles to remove harmful plaque and bacteria. Your floss should hug each side of your teeth when moving up and down between them. To make things even easier, upgrade to an electric toothbrush that can help you with both timing and technique.

2. Start your garden now to reward your mouth later. It is time to start planing and planting your garden for the summer, and choosing crunchy vegetables that are high in fiber can help act as a natural abrasive against your teeth, plus they provide beneficial nutrition for your whole body. Vegetables like carrots, celery, and broccoli are great at scrubbing your teeth and helping you produce saliva to wash away food particles.

Drinking more water can also help maintain your oral health. Plant cucumbers and slice them into a pitcher of water to make it even more refreshing! Avoid sports drinks and soda as they often contain large amounts of sugar, which bacteria LOVE to eat and produce tooth-damaging acid.
