5 Ways to Improve Your Smile Between Dental Visits:

We are all searching for our own, individual perfect smile. As much as we would like to see each of you more often, you probably want to minimize your number of dental visits. Thankfully, there are several ways for you to care of your smile in-between your hygiene visits:

Floss Daily. Our toothbrushes can only reach so far between our teeth. That is where floss comes in. Daily flossing removes plaque and tarter buildup from between teeth and under the gumline. When left alone, this buildup can result in periodontal disease and clinical treatment if decay begins to form. All of a sudden taking 5 minutes to floss every day doesn’t sound so bad.

Use an Electric Toothbrush. As effective as manual toothbrushes have been for many years, they are unable to compare to electric toothbrushes, which have been clinically shown to remove more plaque and develop healthier gums. Many come with pressure sensors to warn you when you are brushing too hard and special modes for sensitive teeth, gum massage, and even whitening. When used twice per day for 2 minutes each time, you will see a significant difference in your oral health.

Clean Tongue. Believe it or not, your tongue is a breeding zone for bacteria, especially those that are known to cause periodontal disease, plaque buildup, and tooth decay. Removing these bacteria with your toothbrush or a tongue scraper on a daily basis can improve your oral health plus improve your breath and ability to taste.

Limit Coffee, Tea, and Red Wine. Even perfectly healthy teeth can develop stains from dark-colored drinks like coffee, tea, and red wine. While superficial stains can be polished off by our hygienists Lynn or Shirley during your visit with us, these drinks can also cause internal staining of the enamel making them more permanent. We understand many of us cannot get through our mornings without a nice cup of coffee, so if you are concerned about staining, be sure to mention it to your hygienist. Drink Lots of Water. It is the healthiest drink for your body and your smile as it flushes away any stubborn food particles between teeth (but not as well as flossing) and discourages tooth decay. Compared to soda and sports drinks which are acidic and contain high levels of sugar, water is by far the best option. Plus your body will thank you, giving you a whole new reason to smile!
